Hidden away in the Fairley Valley, on the northern edge of the "Dark Skies" McKenzie Country, Lake Opuha is yet another of New Zealand's hidden treasures.
Surrounded by the Four Peaks and Sherwood Ranges, the lake is reached by an easy detour off the Southern Scenic Highway, but is rarely visited by passing travellers.
However, even in these conditions the campsite is often host to the more adventurous camper, Caravan or RV on a kiwi road trip.
This photo was grabbed by John soon after he moved into the area to live, on a sightseeing "day in the country" with a new neighbor, and is a real testament to the mantra "ALWAYS bring the camera."
And yes - it was as cold as it looks, the lake was covered by a layer of thin ice over about half of it's surface!
