We got this shot of this cute little guy early one morning after camping overnight beside a Hydro Dam lake on the Waikato River in New Zealand’s North Island.

Very different from the South Islands shallow braided rivers, the Waikato has carved a deep narrow valley through the softer North Island landscape, creating hundreds of wildlife habitats on its journey from Lake Taupo to the Tasman Sea.

Introduced as a game bird, the black swans are now very much part of the environment and this “ugly duckling” downy bundle, will grow into a large aggressive bird, capable of disrupting many a family lakeside picnic.
