Evoking Tolkeins "Watcher at the lake", this rock formation stands guard over the Sutton Salt Lake at the base of the Rock and Pillar Range, positioned just above the level where glaciation scoured the surrounding Strath - Tairi valley of its bedrock outcrops.

The Guardian is a survivor of an ancient tectonic uplift that created new Zealand's South Island.

The combination of sunlight and shade that brought out his features is rarely seen, let alone captured, and this image is the result of a "right place/ right time" opportunity.

We were in the nearby village of Middlemarch waiting to take the 4WD track to the top of the ranges and also managed to capture the "At rest" Locomotive image the same day.

As with all our images this photo is exactly as it came off the camera, it hasn't been edited or enhanced in any way, except possibly cropped to fit the printers parameters.
