This imposing formation of weathered pillars has been built from layered silt and gravel that was deposited by rivers a scant million years ago – barely yesterday in geological terms – and constantly eroded by rain, wind and snow ever since.
This spectacular image is another captured on one of our adventures into the wilds of our homeland's rugged interior.
Right on the Southern edge of the Wild McKenzie Basin in New Zealand’s South Island High Country, they rise up beside the impressively braided Ahuriri River and tower over the surrounding bush, naturally sculptured tall fluted columns the beautiful pastel colours.
On a classic clear Otago day under a blue sky with sharp shadows thrown by the pinnacles into the ravine, this place is a photographer's delight – and you're likely to have it entirely to yourself.
Every time we have been there it has presented a different face, this one of a hot dusty summers day. We were heading home from a few days exploring the gold bearings mountains and rivers of the stunning Otago High Country.

As with all our images this vivid photo is exactly as it came off the camera, it hasn't been edited or enhanced in any way, it absolutely reflects the essence of the place.
The image may possibly have been cropped to fit Etsys parameters.
