When their "nursery pool" was destroyed by the massive Kaikoura Earthquake the seals had to find a new safe place to leave their pups while they were away hunting.
It wasn't long till they found this area of rocky coastline to establish the new haven, and when the engineers repairing the destroyed highway saw the spot, they constructed a large car parking rea so travellers could stop to enjoy the sight of the pups playing and sunbathing in their new home.
