Lake Heron is a fly fisherman’s dream; big fish and few people, hidden at the end of a long, narrow, rough and often flooded gravel road.
Another haven in the Wild Country that is the hallmark of New Zealand's backwoods! Surrounded by a network of smaller mountain Ranges, the lake is also home to a real offgrid campsite that is covered by up to two meters of snow in the winter.
The dominant hill across the lake from the campsite is known locally as "Mount Sugar Loaf." We had dragged the caravan in to the campsite for a couple of days of exploration, photography and escape on our way north after a weeks offroading in the deep south.
This was our reward.
