Appearing to head straight towards the 4 Peaks Mountain Range, the Road to Woodbury only makes it a few kilometers past the little South Island settlement before it is halted by these guardians of the Southern Alps, and travelers find themselves on foot in the Waihi Gorge.
But it's a not a bad place to find yourself!
One of the Nations Best Outback Campsites, a pristine snow fed river, and a rocky river valley to explore, it was our favorite get away from it all spot, and just a few Kms from home.
With a bit of judicial use of the winch and 4wd. the jeep was able to get the caravan right down onto the river flats, just a couple of meters from the water. And most of the time we had the place to ourselves.
Woodbury and the Waihi Gorge - add them to your New Zealand to-do list! But in the meantime bring a little bit of it to your place!
