The dual peaks of Ruapehu and Tongariro are the jewels in the crown of the Tongariro National Park in the centre of New Zealand's North Island.
Ruapehu is an active volcano that has come alive in a series of eruptions over the last 20 years. Despite this is boasts three ski fields, one of the worlds great one day hikes, and was the setting for many scenes in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Most photos of the Mountain are taken from the Eastern Flanks and highlight the bleak "Desert" approaches where the Lava and Ash falls have almost eliminated vegetation growth.
This unique Western aspect of the peak brings the acres of tussock and flaxes that have escaped the devastation of the earlier eruptions.
We were there this day in Mazda's new CX-9 getting some ski field shots for a story (yeah, terrible job, but some-one's got to do it) and got to pick up some nice shots of the mountains in their prime.

As with all our images this photo is exactly as it came off the camera, it hasn't been edited or enhanced in any way.
