The baby seal "Nursery" just off State Highway 1 on NZ's South Island's East Coast had become quite a tourist attraction before it was destroyed in the 2016 Magnitude 7.8 earthquake that drastically altered the whole coastline.
Tragically many of the seals were killed in the seismic cataclysm.
It wasn't long however until the areas remaining seal population found a new nursery for their offspring, and during the massive reconstruction of the destroyed highway, a special seal viewing and picnic area was constructed to allow safe and leisurely enjoyment of the pups frolicking in the sheltered rock pools alongside the road, or sunbathing in the summer sun.
In our travels, Jess, our caravan cat, has found the seals fascinating and spends the whole time we are parked up studying them out of the caravan windows.
