Waihi's Wilderness walk takes its visitors along the banks of the Waihi River up through these cold and damp planted glades, native reserves and boulder strewn river crossings up into the Four Peaks National Park of the South Canterbury highlands, in New Zealand's South Island.

From here the serious tramper could even find themselves camping in the wild heart of the Southern Alps .

The Wilderness walk became another of our favourite destinations when we were lucky enough to be locals, throughout the seasons the walk changed from this dark, winter environment to springs spreading green hue, the vivid green of summers leafy havens, and autumns golden carpet.
